• Occupied since January 15, 2022, the Poterie gymnasium will have to be evacuated before Friday noon, ruled the administrative court.

  • The city of Rennes had asked for its evacuation after the appearance of violence and drug trafficking.

  • A new occupation started at the end of last week in an old hotel near the station.

Seized by the Rennes municipality on Monday, the administrative court rendered its decision on Tuesday and asked for the evacuation of the Poterie gymnasium, occupied since January 15 by more than a hundred people in search of a roof.

These families of migrants from Georgia, Chechnya, Albania but also from Syria or the Congo had taken up residence in this gymnasium in January to take shelter.

In recent weeks, problems of violence and traffic had appeared on the municipal site, pushing the city of Rennes to request the evacuation of the gymnasium by legal means.

The fifteen-day period requested by the associations was not heard.

Justice gave the occupants until Friday, March 25 at noon to vacate the premises.

“The urgency is characterized.

The observed occupation hinders the normal use of the gymnasium by their usual and legitimate users (students from schools in the sector and associations)”, had mentioned the lawyer for the city during the hearing on Monday.

The council had added that “the occupation generates serious and characterized disorders with the public order which are likely to degenerate” with the recent arrival of single men adopting a violent behavior and being devoted to drug trafficking.

Finally, the occupation would quickly disrupt the holding of the presidential election on April 10 and 24, 2022, the gymnasium on rue de Vern being requisitioned as a polling station.

In a press release, the inter-organization of support for people exiled from Rennes had asked the town hall "to shelter all the children of the gymnasium and their families".

“We demand that the prefecture respect its legal obligations to shelter all asylum seekers as well as vulnerable people,” added the collective.

Formulated before the administrative court, these requests were deemed inadmissible on the grounds that they raise “a dispute separate from that submitted to the judge in chambers”.

A new occupation in an old hotel

About 140 people were accommodated at the Poterie gymnasium at the start of the week.

It is not yet known what will become of them on Friday.

Many could join the old Arvor hotel, located near the station, which was requisitioned at the end of last week.

"Abandoned for too long, the hotel is coming back to life for the happiness of the homeless" specifies a collective, before adding that "the places had been empty for more than four years".
