A man who was seriously injured when picking up bulky waste in Frankfurt has succumbed to his injuries.

The 30-year-old man had been in critical health condition in the hospital since the accident at the beginning of last week and died on Monday, the police in Frankfurt said on Tuesday.

The exact circumstances of the accident would be determined further.

The homeless man was wrapped in a mat that was supposed to be lifted into the truck with a grab when disposing of bulky waste.

Two employees of FES Frankfurter Entsorgungs- und Service GmbH discovered the unconscious man.

The Frankfurt Social Affairs Director Elke Voitl (Greens) said: "A young person loses his life, two employees are traumatized during their work - the tragedy of the accident can hardly be described in words for me." The Frankfurt Environmental Affairs Director Rosemarie Heilig (Greens) , who chairs the supervisory board of Frankfurter Entsorgungs- und Service GmbH (FES), was deeply affected.

“The FES employees are used to working in the vicinity of the station district.

They are therefore also sensitized to possible dangerous situations," said Heilig.

There have been no comparable incidents so far.

"We will take this tragic death as an opportunity to question all protective measures and adjust them if necessary." The two FES employees would receive psychological support.
