In 1886, the Spaniard Dolores Sánchez, nicknamed "La Fragosa", was the very first female bullfighter to appear in the bullring dressed in the typical costume of her male peers, the “trace de luces”.

Until the end of the 19th century, female bullfighters were extremely rare and performed only on horseback and in petticoats.

Dolores Sánchez dares to challenge the bulls on foot, paving the way for dozens of other women.

But in 1918, the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, put a stop to the feminization of bullfighting.

For him, a woman in the arena is an offense to morality and decency.

Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach puts on her light suit and takes you into the arena.

Ole!
