Biden: Putin is stuck in a corner and is considering using chemical and biological weapons

US President Joe Biden considered it "clear" to him that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, is considering using chemical and biological weapons in Ukraine, warning Moscow of "serious consequences" if it took such a step.

Biden said that Putin was "crammed into a corner," recalling that Moscow had recently accused Washington of possessing chemical and biological weapons in Europe, stressing that "this is simply not true.

I guarantee you that.”

He added that the Russians “also confirm that Ukraine has biological and chemical weapons in Ukraine.

This is a clear sign that he (Putin) is considering using both of these types of weapons.”

The US president reiterated the warning the White House made earlier this month to Russia in the wake of accusations made by the latter that Ukraine was covering up a secret US-backed chemical weapons program.

On that day, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, "As for Russia's false accusations, and it seems that China is adopting this propaganda, we must monitor any possible Russian use of chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine."

And on Monday, Biden renewed his warning to Moscow that any use of such weapons in Ukraine would have "serious" consequences on the part of Western powers, without specifying the nature of the Western response that threatens it.

Biden said that Putin "knows that there will be serious consequences because of the united front of NATO," without further details.

The US President also confirmed that he had warned his Russian counterpart during their summit last year in Geneva that the US response would be strong if vital infrastructures were subjected to cyber-attacks originating from Russia.

"We had a long conversation about the consequences if he participated in cyber attacks against the United States," he said.
