A report from the consultation committee on the teaching of maths in high school recommends the return of this subject to the common core from the 1st class, which candidate Emmanuel Macron also wants.

Having become a specialty of choice from the Première and followed, in practice, by a majority of boys (58%), the discipline was in decline, with 18% less teaching hours, since the reform of the lycée in 2019.

The major recommendation of this report, produced by a committee of experts led by Pierre Mathiot, director of Sciences Po Lille, was unveiled Thursday by Emmanuel Macron: the return of math in the common core.

The report recommends reintroducing between 1h30 and 2h of weekly math in the common core.

An advance math test as part of the baccalaureate

The common core is the set of subjects that all students must take, regardless of their chosen specialty.

Having become a specialty of choice from the Première and followed, in practice, by a majority of boys (58%) and many pupils from privileged social origins (46%), the discipline was in decline, with 18% of less teaching hours, since the high school reform came into effect at the start of the 2019 school year. How to apply this recommendation?

Experts advise increasing the hours of the course called "scientific education" in Première.

It would go from 2h to 3h30 per week, with therefore a surplus of hours, devoted solely to math.

This adjustment in the schedule could apply from the next school year.

Pupils who wish to do so could continue with maths in the final year as a complementary subject.

Jean-Michel Blanquer would also consider introducing an advance math test as part of the baccalaureate.

Problem: the candidates for the mathematics teacher competitions are missing.

And registrations for Capes are already closed for the next school year.

The courses would therefore be provided from September in overtime, by teachers already in place.
