The words of the Consul General of Greece in Mariupol are particularly strong in describing the ongoing tragedy in this strategic port of Ukraine.
Manolis Androulakis, who landed in Athens on Sunday, compared the city besieged by the Russian army to Guernica or Aleppo.
"Mariupol will be on the list of cities in the world that have been completely destroyed by war, such as Guernica, Stalingrad, Grozny, Aleppo..." he told reporters at the airport.
The Greek consul, who organized several evacuations of Greek nationals from Mariupol, is considered a hero in his country.
He left town on Tuesday.
Civilians “hit blindly”
"We tried to save as many expatriates as possible," the diplomat said, adding, "The heroes are the people who stayed there, and who will try to rebuild their lives from nothing."
The diplomat said in particular that “the civilians were hit in a blind way”, specifying that he had seen shredded bodies.
Mariupol, a city in southeastern Ukraine which had 450,000 inhabitants before the war, has been the target for several weeks of violent bombing by Russian forces and their pro-Russian separatist allies.
The latest official Ukrainian report shows more than 2,100 people killed in this city since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.
The survivors hide in cellars.
Survivors recounted the corpses lying in the streets for several days, hunger, thirst and the biting cold.
