The moment is potentially historic.

And both the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the 51-year-old judge know it.

After listening to the senators' preliminary statements, and thanking the relatives who accompanied her throughout her hearings as well as the role models who inspired her,

Ketanji Brown Jackson

explains that before being a symbol for Afro- Americans, she is above all a judge conscious of her duties.

I have been a judge for almost a decade now.

And I take this responsibility and my duty of independence very seriously.

I judge cases from a neutral point of view.

I assess the facts, and interpret and apply the law in the facts and cases presented to me without fear or preference, in accordance with my oath as a judge.

This first hearing lasted four hours in total.

A warm-up, explained the chairman of the commission.

This Tuesday and Wednesday, Ketanji Brown Jackson will answer questions from senators.

The exercise is eminently partisan.

As she was chosen by a Democratic president, the Republican members of the commission should in particular question her on her supposed laxity in the face of crime.
