The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced its intention to suspend negotiations on a peace treaty with Japan, including the Northern Territories issue.

It is a reaction to the Japanese government's strict sanctions against Russia's military invasion of Ukraine.

On the 21st, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement saying, "About the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' response to the decision of the Japanese government."

In this, he expressed his intention to suspend the peace treaty negotiations, including the Northern Territories issue, saying that he "does not intend to continue."

Regarding the reason, he said, "We considered that Japan's unilateral regulatory measures are clearly unfriendly in relation to the situation in Ukraine. It is impossible to discuss the basic document of bilateral relations." ..

It is also clear that they intend to withdraw from the dialogue on joint economic activities on the four northern islands to advance the peace treaty negotiations and to suspend exchange projects such as the so-called "visa-free exchange" by former islanders in the Northern Territories. I made it.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs unilaterally accused Japan of "bilateral cooperation and all responsibility for damaging Japan's interests lies with the Japanese side, which acts anti-Russian", and Japan is in line with the G7 = seven major countries. It is a reaction to the strict sanctions taken, such as withdrawal of "most favored nation treatment" that guarantees preferential treatment in trade and asset freeze on government officials such as President Putin.

Regarding this, the Japanese embassy in Moscow commented, "The decision not to continue the negotiations to conclude a peace treaty unilaterally from the Russian side is extremely regrettable and absolutely unacceptable."
