A family of five and a guide were found dead on Friday in a canyon in Isalo, southern Madagascar, after severe weather during a hike.

Among them was a Frenchman.

The bodies of the father, of French nationality, the mother, the brother and the grandmother were found at the same time as that of the guide this Friday.

The body of the two-year-old baby was found on Saturday morning, according to local guides who carried out the search.

“I have never seen the water rise so fast”

"We were surprised by the rain," says a 31-year-old French hiker, who went to visit the canyon that day with two friends.

“We met them at the natural swimming pool.

[…] Our guide pushed us to run to get out of the canyon as quickly as possible because the water was rising all of a sudden.

We heard a huge wave breaking, like a dragon coming up behind us.

"They were trapped," says a 50-year-old local guide.

“I myself have never seen the water rise so quickly, it reached 2 m in a few minutes.

The rain fell suddenly, around 1 p.m., which never happens.

I walked my clients back to the parking lot, then I went back to pick up the family and my colleague.

This is where I saw the couple's bodies floating at the entrance to the canyon.

The rainy season (November to April) is in full swing in Madagascar, but showers usually occur at the end of the day.

This drama comes as the tourist season, interrupted for two years after the pandemic, has just resumed.
