Corrupt politicians and powerful businessmen have for decades drained thousands of billions out of Russia - and the outside world is now imposing sanctions on many of them after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

We wanted to know where the money went.

SVT Nyheter and Uppdrag granskning have, together with around 25 other media, initiated a survey of assets belonging to key people close to Vladimir Putin.

These are properties, yachts, private planes and shares in companies - both known and unknown assets that can be determined through documentation and other reliable sources.

The focus of this first publication is a list of 35 individuals.

These are people who have been singled out by imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny and his anti-corruption foundation as "enablers and beneficiaries of the Kremlin's kleptocracy."

Oleg Deripaska

One of the nominees is Oleg Deripaska.

He is usually called Putin's "favorite industrialist" and through his companies has influence in a number of countries, including Sweden.

In several publications, SVT has examined Deripaska's ownership in the aluminum smelter Kubal in Sundsvall and his ownership in companies that have invoiced Swedish authorities billions for large infrastructure projects.

Oleg Deripaska is on the sanctions lists of the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia - but not on the EU.

The new survey reveals, among other things, three exclusive properties in Italian Sardinia, worth over 400 million dollars, which are owned by Deripaska through several mailbox companies.

Roman Abramovich

Roman Abramovich, one of the most famous oligarchs, became wealthy on oil and metal.

He became a well-known name in the West when he became the owner of the British football team Chelsea in the 00's.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Abramovich has been the subject of sanctions from both the EU and the United Kingdom.

The survey reveals over 80 assets.

Among other things, the hitherto unknown "HF Trust" in Cyprus, where secret documents show that the trust in 2016 was valued at 893 million dollars.

Abramovich is also the owner of the luxury yacht Solaris, which is reported to be worth around $ 600 million.

Alisjer Usmanov

Alisher Usmanov has been described as Putin's "favorite oligarch."

He has also made a name for himself in the football world as a former owner of Arsenal and with connections to Everton.

Usmanov was an early investor in Facebook and has held large stakes in Apple, Twitter and Linkedin.

The EU as well as the United States and the United Kingdom have imposed sanctions on him.

Usmanov owns two hitherto unknown mansions outside London through a nephew who is the official buyer.
