  • Analysis Pedro Sánchez sought and worked for months in person for diplomatic peace with Morocco

The

European Commission

on Monday applauded

Spain

's rapprochement with

Morocco

, after accepting the Moroccan autonomy plan for

Western Sahara

, although it recalled that the status of this territory must be settled in a political process in accordance with

United Nations

resolutions .

"On the position of Spain, the

European Union

welcomes the positive developments between the Member States and Morocco in the bilateral relationship that benefit the association of the EU and Morocco", assured the EU Foreign Affairs spokeswoman,

Nabila Massrali

.

The Government of

Pedro Sánchez

announced last Friday a "new stage" in the relationship with

Rabat

, after acknowledging in a letter to King

Mohamed VI

that the autonomy plan for Western Sahara proposed by Morocco constitutes "the most serious and realistic base" to find a solution to this conflict.

In any case, Massrali has recalled that the issue of Western Sahara must be resolved through a political process, in accordance with United Nations resolutions.

"The solution must be political, fair, realistic, pragmatic, sustainable over time and mutually accepted," the community spokesperson insisted.

With this step, Sánchez yields to pressure from Rabat, who asked Madrid for clarity on the plan for the former Spanish colony.

However, this shift has opened another front with

Algeria

, which assures that the Spanish government never informed it in advance and has already called its ambassador in Madrid for consultations.
