A very disturbing new phenomenon has been gaining momentum in the United States for several years: that of “phantom weapons”.

Untraceable, these can be purchased in spare parts on the Internet and can be assembled very easily at home.

Their sales continue to increase.

Since last November, they have been used to commit numerous shootings in schools and have caused several victims, reports ABC News relayed by

Slate.

“The first time we heard about these weapons, we thought that even a child could get hold of them.

This is unfortunately no longer a simple hypothesis, ”said Alex McCourt, assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Prevention and Policy, relate our colleagues.

Legislative procedures in progress

According to the professor, two types of guns are available.

A first, in plastic, which can be made with a 3D printer.

It can only fire one ammunition.

Then, a second that the buyer receives this time as a kit, without a serial number.

He has been found many times at crime scenes.

These “phantom weapons” received as a kit are not considered weapons and are therefore not declared.

This is why adolescents, or even people who have been prohibited by law from carrying weapons, can obtain them.

Faced with this problem, nine American states, including New York and California, have started legislative procedures.

A solution still insufficient for Alex McCourt.
