Normally, the committee does not issue warnings because mountain visitors must be prepared to cope with the situations and weather conditions that may arise, but now an exception is made.

It has been unusually hot weather recently which has made ice, which would normally be stable, quickly become unreliable.

“Open vigils and thin ice have been reported around Torneträsk, but the situation can be expected to be similar over the entire forest and mountain area.

The strong wind is assumed to have contributed through wave movements in the ice, ”writes the mountain safety committee in its warning, which is signed by Anders Bergvall and Roine Norström.

On Sunday, a scooter also went through the ice in Abisko harbor, but fortunately the driver was able to save himself.

Wet snow and sleet after the storm

On Saturday, there were strong storm winds in the mountains with snow-mixed rain.

Both in the forest terrain and in the mountains, it has become difficult to get around with snowmobiles and skis because there has been wet snow and slush, with many jams as a result.

The Nikkaluokta-Kebnekaise route is said to be very difficult.

The Kiriuna mountain safety committee also warns that there is a risk of snowstorms and that jocks and streams break up, as the warm weather must remain even at higher altitudes.
