Last week, a young girl was raped by security forces on the sidelines of a so-called "one million" demonstration, which sparked anger in the country.

Several thousand women then marched to denounce the proliferation of sexual assaults and the impunity enjoyed by the security forces.

The 18-year-old girl was riding a minibus in central Khartoum when security forces - looking for protesters returning home - stopped the vehicle.

They threw tear gas, forcing the passengers out of the bus.

The victim was then dragged under a bridge by four men dressed in military uniform, raped, before being abandoned naked.

Rescued by passers-by, she was taken to hospital for treatment.

According to a women's rights activist, at least three women were raped that day, on the sidelines of this rally.

Rape, harassment, insults... This violence has become common, she says, intended to scare women and dissuade them from taking part in demonstrations.

She denounces the impunity enjoyed by the perpetrators of these crimes.

According to her, 26 cases of rape have been reported, on the sidelines of gatherings, since the military junta's coup last October.
