One dead and 24 injured in a shooting at a car show in the United States

One person was killed and at least 24 others were injured in a shooting at a car showroom in the southern US state of Arkansas, police said Sunday.

"One person is in custody and the search for others continues today," Arkansas Police said in a statement.

The shooting took place in the parking lot of a car showroom in the small town of Dumas, with a population of about 4,000.

And local Kark TV quoted the town's police chief that among the injured were children.

One of the organizers, Wallace McGee, of a youth association, said the aim of the exhibition was to "advocate a break from violence."

Describing the first moments of the shooting, he added, "The priority for all of us was to keep children and people away from the bullets."

Shootings are a frequent blight in the United States, where the right to own guns is guaranteed by the Constitution.

Attempts to regulate the sale of firearms are often stymied in the US Congress, where the NRA has strong influence.

Since the beginning of 2022, the Gun Fire Archive has recorded about 9,200 gun deaths in the United States, including suicides.

The number of deaths reached 45,000 over the entire year of 2021, according to the same source.
