The Covid-19 epidemic is starting again in the country where it appeared.

China, where the coronavirus was detected for the first time at the end of 2019, had however managed to very largely stem the epidemic, by putting in place particularly strict health measures.

Repeated tests, quarantines, targeted confinements from the detection of the first cases in a home… The draconian measures had marked the spirits during the Winter Olympics.

But the highly contagious Omicron variant is still spreading in the country, which recorded 4,053 new cases this Sunday, two-thirds of them in Jilin.

It is in this province bordering North Korea and Russia that the first two deaths from the coronavirus in more than a year have been recorded by the Chinese authorities.

In Changchun, only medical staff can leave their homes

To stem the spread of the virus, the eponymous city of Jilin will impose strict confinement on its approximately 4.5 million inhabitants, the town hall announced on Sunday.

From Monday midnight and for a period of three days, the inhabitants of Jilin will not be able to leave their homes or residences.

Jilin Province, which reported thousands of cases last week, has built eight temporary hospitals and two quarantine centers to handle the outbreak.

For its part, the city of Changchun, placed in confinement at the beginning of the month, announced on Saturday evening that it would also tighten its measures for three days.

From now on, only medical personnel and people in connection with the epidemic are authorized to go out.

Since the start of the containment on March 11, the 9 million inhabitants of Changchun could still go out once every two days to buy food.
