Why does the Ukrainian president insist on wearing the "khaki T-shirt"? And what did the Americans say about him?

During his frequent appearances on social media or international meetings, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has completely abandoned the official appearance, opting to appear in a short-sleeved T-shirt in military khaki.

Zelensky continued to wear the "simple" shirt when he addressed the US Congress on Wednesday, which prompted some to criticize him.

US stockbroker and chief economist Peter Schiff accused the Ukrainian leader of "disrespecting" the United States by not wearing a suit during his speech.

"I understand times are tough, but doesn't the president of Ukraine have a uniform?" Schiff wrote in a post on Twitter.

"I don't have much respect for the current members of the US Congress either, but I still don't address them in a T-shirt," he added.

Schiff faced a wave of criticism for his "negative" comments on the appearance of the Ukrainian president, accusing him of ignorance about the current crisis.

"I think you probably don't fully understand how difficult times are, Peter," wrote comedian David Badel.

American filmmaker Andy Ostroy wrote: "You saw a man begging so desperately for his country's survival in the face of a brutal army... and your first thought was that he wasn't wearing a suit?"

Another activist wrote: "Really? He (Zelensky) is at war and fighting for his country, and his city is besieged by the Russians. Sorry you didn't like his clothes."

And by evaluating the many reactions that attacked Schiff, it seems that Zelensky succeeded in sympathizing with the majority in his military shirt, which may be a deliberate "strategy" followed by the Ukrainian president to show the severity of the crisis he is experiencing, and to bring him closer to his citizens, his country and his army.
