• The situation in Ukraine was discussed at the last plenary session of the Hauts-de-France regional council.

  • At the podium, the Honorary Consul of Ukraine spoke about the situation in his country.

  • The elected officials voted for a deliberation to release emergency aid of 200,000 euros.

“A drama is playing out in Ukraine.

It's no longer the killing, it's the hunger.

It is with these very harsh words that the honorary consul of Ukraine in France, Etienne Mourmant, described the situation in his country, 20 days after the start of the Russian invasion.

He delivered a poignant speech from the podium of the hemicycle of the Hauts-de-France regional council, meeting in plenary session on Thursday, before the vote on a deliberation of solidarity with Ukraine.

In our region, as everywhere in France, outpourings of solidarity for Ukraine have multiplied since the beginning of the conflict.

A generosity of citizens and communities which nevertheless tended to go all over the place, for lack of organization.

And if the honorary consul largely welcomed all the initiatives, he also called for streamlining them to gain efficiency.

“We must channel these donations, stop giving clothes for example but rather food.

Aid must be organised, first of all for the countries currently hosting the refugees, but also for the Ukrainians who have remained in their country”, declared Etienne Mourmant.

Organize the delivery of humanitarian aid

Thus, a budget of 200,000 euros has been released to be used for two types of action.

The first is the establishment of seven logistics platforms, several of which are already in service, to deliver humanitarian aid, in particular to the Polish region of Voivodeship of Silesia.

The second half of the envelope should make it possible to “finance actions from the regional territory”.

To coordinate actions, the region has opened a crisis unit.

“This cell facilitates the implementation of the logistics of this operation.

It also shares alert points concerning the impact of this crisis on economic and social activity, but also for businesses in the region, ”details the regional council in a press release.

Reception solutions have been found to accommodate Ukrainian athletes who have fled their country.

They are already several to be accommodated in the premises of Creps de Wattignies and at the indoor stadium of Liévin.

The region also works in parallel to welcome Ukrainian researchers and academics.
