The Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced that 4 missiles were fired last night at the air base in the city of Balad in Salah al-Din Governorate (north of Baghdad).

The Security Media Cell of the Ministry of Defense said - in a statement - that the missiles were launched by what it described as terrorist gangs from Khalis district in Diyala Governorate (northeast of Baghdad).

She added that the missiles fell in open areas of the base, which is the largest of its kind in Iraq and includes "F-16" planes belonging to the Iraqi army, noting that the attack did not result in human or material damage.

The Security Media Cell in the Iraqi Ministry of Defense pledged to pursue the perpetrators of the attack, which it described as a terrorist act.

For its part, the Iraqi News Agency quoted the commander of the base, Major General Zia Mohsen, that the base was attacked by four missiles that took place in open areas inside the base and that it did not cause any damage, while security sources in Salah al-Din Governorate stated that the rockets fired at the base were of a type. According to Reuters, this military facility hosts American contractors, and previously included the forces of the international coalition led by the United States.

Balad Air Base, Ain al-Assad Base in Anbar (west), the Green Zone in Baghdad - which includes the US embassy - and military sites in Erbil in the Kurdistan region (northern Iraq) have been subjected to several missile attacks in the past few years.

In the past, armed groups described as backed by Iran have claimed responsibility for similar attacks.


The attack on Balad Air Base comes days after Iranian missile strikes, which targeted at dawn last Sunday, sites in the city of Erbil, and Tehran said that Israel used them to launch attacks on Iran.

Iraq condemned the Iranian bombing, and the Kurdistan region authorities strongly denied any Israeli presence in the region.

The Minister of the Interior of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, Riber Ahmed, called for the opening of a comprehensive investigation, with the participation of an Iraqi, UN, Iranian, regarding the Iranian bombing of the city of Erbil, calling on everyone who has evidence regarding Iranian allegations about the existence of an Israeli center to submit it.

Ahmed's statements came in a press conference held at the Iraqi parliament building after a meeting of the Parliamentary Fact-Finding Committee charged with investigating the missile targeting incident in Erbil.
