On December 22, 1963, Parliament voted to create the legal status of conscientious objector.

Behind the adoption of this law, there is a man who made anti-militarism the fight of his life, the militant Louis Lecoin (1888-1971).

Born into a poor family in Berry, Louis Lecoin did odd jobs and got involved in trade unionism at a very young age.

Refusing to bear arms, he sacrificed his freedom to his ideas and spent 12 years behind bars for being guilty of insubordination.

The activist creates a newspaper to disseminate his pacifist ideas and will receive the support of renowned intellectuals such as Albert Camus, Jean Giono or Abbé Pierre.
