Urgent humanitarian aid for civilians affected by the war in Ukraine

Based on the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, two flights carrying urgent humanitarian aid were operated to provide relief to civilians affected by the war in Ukraine, who were forced out by military operations there. In search of a safe haven in neighboring European countries.

The two flights were operated to the airports of Warsaw in Poland and Liege in Belgium, where the aid will be transported by land to Poland upon its arrival, through coordination between the International City for Humanitarian Services in Dubai and international relief organizations.  

This step came in coordination with United Nations organizations, including: the United Nations Emergency Response Depot, the International Medical Corps, the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the World Food Program’s Rapid ICT Emergency Support Team, and the World Food Programme. The World Health Organization as well as other humanitarian organizations, where it is expected that the number of beneficiaries of these supplies will reach about 85,000 people.

The United Arab Emirates flew an aid plane to Lublin in Poland on March 7, carrying 30 tons of emergency aid and medical supplies, as part of relief efforts to help those affected by that war.

The UAE also announced a contribution of 18.36 million dirhams (5 million US dollars) to support relief efforts, during the United Nations Pledging Conference, emphasizing its commitment to the principles of solidarity in times of adversity and humanitarian crises.

In this regard, the Director of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the UAE, Nadia Jabbour, expressed her sincere thanks and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, for this generous humanitarian gesture from His Highness, and said: "UNHCR is proud of its strategic partnership with the International City. For humanitarian services in Dubai, we appreciate this important contribution, which expresses the UAE’s commitment to various humanitarian issues and situations, and there is no doubt that this contribution will support UNHCR’s response to emergencies in Ukraine and neighboring countries.”

Jabbour added: “So far, more than 3 million people have fled Ukraine to neighboring countries in search of safe shelter, and around 2.9 million people have been identified in need of assistance inside Ukraine, where UNHCR is working with relevant authorities, UN agencies and partners to provide much-needed humanitarian assistance. It's needed there."
