On Thursday, the government appointed Stefan Löfven as the new chairman of Stockholm's international peace research institute, Sipri.

He replaces party colleague Jan Eliasson, who has held the role for the past five years.

- I believe that Sipri can play a role both with factual information and to facilitate various conversations.

We will see, but I definitely think that Sipri can play a role, says Stefan Löfven to TT.

This is the second appointment Stefan Löfven has received since he resigned as party leader for the Social Democrats and prime minister in November last year.

In February, he was given a role within the UN to lead the work of preparations for a summit on future global cooperation.

The chairman of Sipri is appointed by the government after nomination from the Peace Research Institute.

The term of office extends over five years, and a chairman may serve a maximum of two terms.

Stefan Löfven will take up the role on 1 June.
