• Corruption The Supreme Court will review the conviction of Chaves and Griñán for the ERE on May 4

The former president of the Board José Antonio Griñán considers that his conviction for the ERE case was the result of

a political hunt

promoted by the Popular Party and points to the former minister and former president of the Andalusian PP,

Javier Arenas

, as a possible inducer, citing information that a popular leader had transferred to him in that sense.

Griñán has written a memoir in which he assures that

he is not in the mood for revenge

but in which he dedicates a few pages to describing his prosecution in the ERE case as the result of political pressure from the PP

to end his political career

and that of Manuel Chavez.

When nothing is expected

is the title of the book that, published by Galaxia Gutenberg, will hit bookstores on the 26th of this month.

As a demonstration of his theory about the hand of the PP behind his prosecution, Griñán quotes in his book a few words from the former Minister of Justice of the PP,

Rafael Catalá

, in which he assumes that the former presidents of the Board should have been aware of what had happened with the ERE funds, given the seriousness of the events.

"It did not seem very appropriate that the highest political authority of the Justice ruled on a matter submitted to the courts and made a judgment of inference that claimed to be guilty. Such nonsense was part, however, of the

strategy of the Popular Party

", adds the former president.

Later, he refers to a fortuitous meeting with a PP leader who told him: "You are very wrong; the one who screwed you was not Juan Ignacio Zoido but Javier Arenas."

"I preferred to remain silent because I don't like to talk about this matter, and even less so with the leaders of my accusers' party, but their information disturbed me and made me think about that

political interference in the work of the judges

by the popular ones that the PP spokesman in the Senate, Ignacio Cosidó, had boasted".

Griñán was sentenced to six years in prison in the trial held by the

Seville Court

on the main part of the ERE case.

The court considered it proven that he had committed crimes of

prevarication and embezzlement

in the fraudulent distribution of

679 million euros

of public funds.

The sentence for former President Manuel Chaves was 9 years of disqualification.

Both Griñán and Chaves and the rest of the convicted former socialist leaders appealed the ruling to the Supreme Court, which has not yet ruled.

In his memoir, former President Griñán recounts how he felt during the trial and how his political opponents turned the ERE into the great corruption case of socialism.

"We [Chaves and him] became

two political corpses that no one would want to have in their closet

of him », he affirms.

In an interview granted to

Publisher Weekly

magazine and published this Thursday, Griñán insists that he is convinced that he was the victim of a political operation and affirms that he continues "without understanding anything of what happened."

"I have no doubt that it was

a politically manipulated case

. It had no basis whatsoever to get where it did. And I hope the Supreme Court understands that."

On the role of Javier Arenas as instigator of that operation, he adds: "I don't know. But, look: if it's true,

I don't hold any grudge against him

. In fact, I remember him accompanying our pain when my legal teacher, my little brother mother and something like an older brother for me, my uncle Rafael, was assassinated by ETA".

Griñán speaks in the book about the decision of the Court of Seville, pending review by the Supreme Court, that it is based "on a continuous

judgment of inferences

".

He assures that "proven facts" are not given, but the mere "opinion of the court", for which he trusts that the Supreme Court "takes it into account".
