An investigation has been opened in France into a possible war crime after the death on Monday in Ukraine of Pierre Zakrzewski, a Franco-Irish journalist, the anti-terrorist prosecution (Pnat) said on Wednesday.

A Pnat investigation

The Pnat indicated that the investigation, made possible by the French nationality of the journalist, is open for "willful attack on the life of a person protected by international law" and "deliberate attack against a civilian who does not participate directly to hostilities".

A Fox News cameraman

Pierre Zakrzewski, a Franco-Irish cameraman for Fox News, and Oleksandra Kuvshynova, a Ukrainian who accompanied him, died Monday in Horenka, northwest of the capital, "when their vehicle was the target of fire", a Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott said in a statement, adding that they were with reporter Benjamin Hall, who was injured.

The investigation was entrusted to the gendarmes of the Central Office for the fight against crimes against humanity, genocides and war crimes (OCLCH).

Investigations in Germany and Spain

While the German and Spanish courts had already opened investigations for "war crimes", with broader universal jurisdiction, the Pnat had told AFP that it could only open investigations if a victim was French. , if the author of the alleged war crime is French, or if the author of the offense has his habitual residence on French soil.

Jean-Yves Le Drian, the head of French diplomacy, recalled on Wednesday "the obligation" for the belligerents in Ukraine to guarantee the protection of journalists covering the conflict.
