According to Martin Kragh, Deputy Head of the Center for Eastern European Studies at the Foreign Policy Institute, the twisted language from Russia is not surprising.

It is in line with the country's development even in the longer term, he says.

"Russia has long been described as an authoritarian regime in which power is concentrated in Putin's hands, but year by year the system has become increasingly authoritarian and now people are beginning to wonder if words like totalitarian society are not a better description," he said in Aktuellt.

That picture is shared by Gudrun Persson, who is the research leader at the Swedish Defense Research Agency (FOI).

- I would say that Russia is moving towards a totalitarian society at a good pace.

We are not there yet, but what this speech shows is that everyone should align themselves with the ranks.

It is a Russia that is closing in and is partly hostile to its own population, she says.
