Many of the refugees who come to Sweden from war-torn Ukraine also bring their pets with them.

According to estimates from the Swedish Board of Agriculture, this is about ten percent.

Usually there are rules that you have to abide by when bringing an animal into Sweden, but right now assessments are made instead on a case-by-case basis.

In normal cases, the Swedish Customs carries out careful checks on the documentation that is available on the animals that are taken in at the Swedish border.

But to make it easier for the Ukrainian refugees who are now arriving in Sweden with their pets, the requirement that this must be notified in advance has been removed.

Looking for premises for insulation

The Swedish Board of Agriculture has now issued information that the animals that have not been checked by customs need to be taken to a Swedish veterinarian to check the animals' infection protection status.

The authority has also turned to the country's county administrative boards, including Örebro and sought premises that can be used for isolation of the pets that have arrived from Ukraine.

So far, no checks have been made in Örebro County, but Ella Sigvardsson believes that it may become relevant in the future.

- We assess that there is a high risk that this may happen.
