In the breakaway republic of Transnistria in the eastern part of Moldova, Russian forces have long been established, and many of the inhabitants right on the border with Ukraine have a growing feeling that what is now affecting the neighboring country may also affect them.

- We are so close to the coast, if they fire a missile it could hit us by mistake, says Andrei Gorei, who lives in the village of Tudora.

Here the two countries are separated only by a river, and on the other side of the water a war is going on that was considered unthinkable just a few weeks ago.

In Tudora, the proximity to Ukraine is obvious.

- We usually call ourselves "Little Odessa", says Ludmila Gavrilovic.
