A Russian journalist who boycotted a live news broadcast to protest the war in Ukraine has been "arrested and has disappeared" and "her lawyers have not been allowed to contact her," a European Commission spokesperson said on Tuesday.

News editor Marina Ovsyanikova, who works for Russia's Channel One, entered the news broadcasting studio and raised a banner in front of the camera protesting Russia's war on Ukraine during the Monday evening newscast.

The sign she was carrying stated that "viewers are being lied to."

A day after the incident, European Commission spokesman Peter Stano said Ovsiannikova had "taken a morally courageous stand to oppose the Kremlin's lies and propaganda live on a Russian state TV channel."

On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the news editor for her protest stance.
