Kiruna Church closes for two years - sets it up for weddings and funerals

During the year 2025, the relocation of Kiruna Church will begin, which today can accommodate 800 people.

The alternatives available nearby are the parish home and a small church in Jukkasjärvi and Tuollavaara.

There are also several churches in the villages in Kiruna municipality but they do not come close to the capacity that Kiruna church offers.

"We must be flexible and creative"

- Unfortunately not, we can not crack Kiruna church when it comes to how many people can fit, says Olle Thoors, communicator at the Church of Sweden.

Now the church will try to find other solutions for larger funerals, weddings or other events.

- We can borrow premises to be a little flexible and creative, I can imagine collaboration with hotels and industries, says Olle Thoors.
