Federal Minister of Finance Christian Lindner has specified his ideas for direct relief for drivers when filling up with diesel and petrol.

For example, a state subsidy of 40 cents per liter could be paid out for a limited period of three months, which would cost the state around 6.6 billion euros, the FDP leader told the "Rheinische Post" according to the preliminary report.

The concrete design is still open in the government.

"If it's up to me, we'll end up with the tank discount at less than two euros per liter of diesel and petrol."

His idea has not yet been approved by the government.

But one can assume that Chancellor Olaf Scholz "never heard about my thoughts from the newspaper."

But there must also be further relief for families, commuters, tradespeople and the socially disadvantaged.

He does not think the demands of the Green coalition partner to combine a fuel discount with a speed limit on the motorway are appropriate.

Lindner also relies on fuel discounts instead of tax cuts at European level.

On Monday, on the sidelines of the Eurogroup's deliberations in Brussels, he said that such discount solutions would offer "specific help" against the massive rise in energy prices in the Ukraine war.

They are therefore "the more agile instrument".

In Brussels, the finance minister pointed out that, in addition to Germany, France was also examining a discount solution.

The federal government had previously announced additional relief measures that could be decided this week.

Lindner proposes a discount for motorists directly at the gas station.

Lindner's proposal for a tank discount was also met with criticism on Monday.
