China, where the coronavirus was first detected at the end of 2019, had managed to largely stem the epidemic by resorting to strict containment measures, but the Omicron strain has given rise in recent months to numerous outbreaks in the country. whole country. 

For the past few days, tens of millions of inhabitants of the most populous country in the world have been placed in quarantine at home, in particular in the technological metropolis of Shenzhen (south), at the gates of Hong Kong.

Small but high numbers for China

These measures have led to the closure of many factories, including those of the Taiwanese giant Foxconn, Apple's main supplier, in the megalopolis of 17 million inhabitants.

Tuesday's figures were greatly weighed down by the toll of Jilin province (northeast), bordering North Korea.

More than 3,000 contaminations have been recorded in this province alone.

While these figures remain modest compared to the tolls recorded elsewhere in the world, they are high for China, which has only recorded around 120,000 cases of Covid in all and for all since the start of the epidemic, including 4,636. mortals.

The last death due to Covid officially dates back to the beginning of 2021.
