Two women and three children, Ukrainian refugees, had a bit of luck on Monday.

They are the first to benefit from official housing made available by the European Community of Alsace, located in the François Truffaut college, in the Hautepierre district of Strasbourg.

Tired, distressed, the two small families, one from Kharkiv and the other from kyiv, do not dwell on their sad adventure.

"It's too early to talk about it," confides one of the women.

Arrived without any business, they were in transit for Portugal, without having any ties or relatives there.

But "it was the destination of the only bus" that had allowed them to escape the war.

It was during a stopover in the premises of the CEA that the case settled for them.

Lucky, because there is a serious shortage of housing, especially collective housing, because the movement is accelerating in Strasbourg, a natural gateway given its geographical position and its status as European capital.

“From 130 people per day since Friday we have gone to 250 per day and it continues to increase confirms the prefect Josiane Chevalier.

More than 150 people came to the first reception center this morning alone.

Saturation of accommodation capacities in Strasbourg

Since the start of the crisis, 1,100 people have arrived in the Bas-Rhin and 800 have been accommodated, hence “the saturation of our accommodation capacities, explains the prefect.

We have to find other solutions.

“Solutions that will inevitably involve a distribution of arrivals throughout the Grand-Est.

“Besides, a bus left for the Vosges this afternoon with about fifty people, but we will have to work on the whole Grand-Est region, or even beyond if our capacities were to be saturated” warns Josiane Chevalier.

As a reminder, collective accommodation is always preferred by the authorities.

A hundred places in private accommodation have also been identified.

“But it is not emergency accommodation that we are looking for, but permanent accommodation, insist the authorities.

“Things can last…
