Vehicle license plates with abbreviations that have a right-wing extremist background such as HJ, NS and SA have long been banned in Hesse.

The district of Gießen is now expanding its list of inadmissible letter abbreviations by four more.

These are the abbreviations HH, AH, BH and WP.

The latter in particular, according to the district administration, appear harmless at first glance.

In fact, these combinations are used to refer to the far-right Blood and Honor network and the racist theory of White Pride, which advocates the supremacy of the “white race.”

In the future, that should no longer be possible in the Gießen district, because right-wing extremism and inhuman ideologies have no place in our society, says Transport Director Christian Zuckermann (The Greens).

This must be countered at all levels.

As the district administration also reports, for technical reasons, number combinations with a right-wing extremist background cannot yet be blocked.

Specifically, it is about the codes 88, 18 and 444, which stand for "Heil Hitler", Adolf Hitler and "Germany for the Germans".

However, a conversion of the data processing system should soon ensure that these combinations on Gießen license plates are no longer possible.

However, grandfathering applies to license plates that have already been issued.

They remain valid until the vehicle in question is deregistered.
