• Justice has opened an investigation following several stings that occurred during festive evenings.

  • Administration of chemical substances, in particular GHB, was suspected.

But it could not be confirmed.

  • The investigations are continuing.

    Controls are tightened.

A little more than fifteen days after the revelation of several reports of stings from customers who had frequented Nantes festive nightlife establishments, new cases have been brought to the attention of justice, reports the Nantes prosecutor on Monday afternoon.

In total, 23 reports of people stung in the limbs, back, or shoulder by an undetermined object have been identified to date.

The last two reports were made over the weekend.

Seventeen complaints have been filed, specifies Renaud Gaudeul, public prosecutor, who has opened an investigation for "administration of harmful substances" and "willful violence with a weapon".

The victims are overwhelmingly women, between the ages of 18 and 30.

The facts occurred in eight establishments, at different times, “sometimes during the same night”.

Pending further analyses, the blood and urine samples taken quickly from 16 victims have not, for the time being, made it possible to establish that there had been an injection of a product, in particular GHB, nicknamed the “date rape drug”.

“The results are negative for GHB.

All toxins are being researched,” confirms Renaud Gaudeul, who is hard pressed to give, at this stage, an explanation for the phenomenon not observed elsewhere in France.

Is it a syringe or something else?

“The bites were objectified by a doctor in the majority of cases”, indicates the prosecutor, while acknowledging that the nature of the object used cannot be specified.

“No syringes were found,” he adds.

All of the victims had a suspicious mark somewhere on the body.

Some reported experiencing dizziness or headaches.

Nothing else.

No sexual assault is suspected, according to the Nantes prosecutor's office.

“I understand the concern but I am not able to give an answer, reacts Renaud Gaudeul.

The investigations are continuing.

The police services remain extremely mobilized on this subject.

“Surveillance in the bars and nightclubs of Nantes is, in particular, operated.

The establishments themselves have reinforced their security in an attempt to reassure customers.

A suspect was arrested at the end of February and then taken into custody.

But he was exonerated and released "without follow-up", specifies the prosecutor
