According to media reports, actor and Oscar winner Willam Hurt has died at the age of 71.
The actor died peacefully on Sunday a week before his 72nd birthday, quoted the online portal "Deadline" from a statement by Hurt's son Will.
Hurt was diagnosed with end-stage prostate cancer in May 2018.
In his statement, the son did not say whether the actor succumbed to his cancer.
The family confirmed the Oscar winner's death to Variety magazine.
Hurt won the 1985 Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Spider Woman's Kiss, in which he played Luis Molina, a gay inmate who shares a cell with a political prisoner in a Brazilian prison.
Hurt received further nominations in 1987 for his performance in God's Forgotten Children, a year later for his role in Broadcast News, and in 2006 for his supporting role in Canadian director David Cronenberg's A History of Violence.
