A Boeing Royal Air Maroc plane took off on Sunday from Casablanca, the economic capital of the Kingdom, heading to Tel Aviv, in the first direct commercial flight between Morocco and Israel, 15 months after the normalization of relations between the two countries.

A source at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca said that the plane took off on Sunday at nine GMT.

The Moroccan airline said in a statement that the plane was carrying "a delegation of Moroccan businessmen and personalities from the world of culture."

The statement added that the launch of this line of flights between Israel and Morocco aims to "facilitate transportation between the two countries for all Moroccan travelers and businessmen."

This line was scheduled to open late last year.

But it was delayed as the borders were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Four flights per week will be operated on this new airline.

The Israeli Liaison Office expressed in a tweet on Twitter its satisfaction that this new line "means more tourists and new relations for the sake of greater rapprochement."
