Just hours after Russia launched its offensive against Ukraine, Olena could see her own face on news sites around the world.
Her house was among the first to be hit by the bombings, and the pictures from the site gave a first glimpse of how civilians would be affected in the coming weeks.
"I was lucky to survive," she told the AFP news agency shortly after the photo was taken.
Since then, several images from the war have become symbols of the war.
