• The elected environmentalists presented Friday the largest urban operation of the mandate: the Kennedy block.

  • This project will include the Ateliers de la danse, a new school group and a swimming pool, built in the 8th arrondissement.

  • Estimated cost 60 million euros for full delivery in 2026.

"This will be the major operation of our mandate", the "biggest in terms of investment".

On Friday, environmentalists, at the head of the city of Lyon, presented the Îlot Kennedy supposed to "reinforce the attractiveness" of the 8th arrondissement.

An urban project costing 60 million euros, which will include a new school complex, the Ateliers de la maison de la danse and a sports complex, including a new swimming pool.

“Certain districts of Lyon suffer from a lack of public facilities.

This one is part of it, ”said Grégory Doucet, the mayor of Lyon.

The Kennedy School, built in 1961 and whose buildings are too obsolete, will be destroyed in the coming months.

A new school group will come out of the ground by the start of the 2025 school year. "It will welcome 518 students, divided into 18 classes: 8 kindergartens and 10 elementary", explains Stéphanie Léger, assistant in charge of Education.

Swimming pool deficiency

The complex will be accompanied by a sports complex, the construction of which should be completed a year later.

A climbing wall will take place there "to meet the very strong local demand", but also, great novelty, a swimming pool.

“There is a real deficiency at this level, as in all the big cities of France”, recognizes Julia Nublat-Faure, deputy in charge of sport and youth.

Two pools are planned.

They will be reserved for schools and associations.

But not only.

The general public will also have access to avoid going to the Delessert or Jean Macé swimming pools, which remain the closest to the area.

The town hall is however aware that this will not be enough to fill the deficit of swimming pools.

“Building a swimming pool is extremely expensive.

In the meantime, we are working on that of Charial so that it is open in summer and winter.

We are considering the same thing, once we have renovated that of Garibaldi, ”promises the elected official.

Dance workshops for 2026

Finally, the Kennedy block will be completed by the creation of the Ateliers de la danse, so dear to Dominique Hervieu, former director of the dance house.

"It is true that the city lacked equipment to support the emergence and choreographic creation", recognizes Nathalie Perrin-Gilbert, in charge of culture, also tackling the balance sheet of Gérard Collomb.

“We were told of a new Maison de la danse in Confluence, then in 2015, a project for a dance workshop in the Guimet museum for 10 million.

But there was nothing consistent.

Five years later, we were talking about 35 million euros and no building permit had been signed.

In this case, there is a problem”.

The future realization will therefore be adjacent to the Maison de la danse.

It will include a creation room and two creation studios.

“Visitors will be able to go there, schoolchildren too.

The objective is to create possible encounters between the public and choreographic creation,” concludes the elected official.

Delivery expected by the end of 2025.
