In Spain, the Constitutional Court has just announced the repeal of the Catalan rent regulation law because, according to it, the region would not be competent to legislate on the subject.

In force for a year and a half, it had made it possible to lower rents in the major cities of the region, in particular in Barcelona.

Catalonia no longer has the right to regulate the rents of its big cities.

This is what the Spanish Constitutional Court decided this week by breaking the law in force for a year and a half in the region.

Andrea Llach came to demonstrate this Saturday against the repeal of this law.

“

I'm in a roommate with two other people and that's what I can afford with the law in force.

Without this law it would be impossible to have my independence

 ,” she laments.

The law responded to an emergency when rents had increased by 45% in 5 years in the region.

Almost 40 times more than salaries.

Simona Adabo, who came with her daughter, is looking for an apartment.

“

I imagine it will be €200 more minimum for an apartment of mine, which I already find horribly expensive

 ,” she says.

Only hope for associations: a similar law should see the light of day at the national level soon.

"

It is much less advanced, less courageous than our Catalan law but as it still needs to be debated, we hope that thanks to the mobilization we will improve its content

", explains Enric Aragones of the Tenants' Union.

Since Catalan law, rents have fallen by 5% in Barcelona and never have there been as many rental contracts signed as in 2021 in the region.
