In its clear commitment to pragmatism, far removed from the disobedience that led some of its main leaders, such as its president, Oriol Junqueras, to prison for sedition, the ERC is holding a National Conference this weekend to approve its new political roadmap.

The inauguration was carried out by the president of the Generalitat and national coordinator of the ERC, Pere Aragonès, who reflected the formation's commitment to dialogue, which aspires to lead political Catalanist centrism, away from other parties with a discourse still anchored in the epic nationalist.

Of course, the Republicans do not forget the unilateral route, although more as a threatening 'plan B' in their conversations with the State than as a real option.

In his speech, Pere Aragonès urged progress towards independence with his "reality principle" and the "sum" of all sovereignism, an option with which he intends to distance himself from other parties such as his Govern de JxCat partners.

"A country does not advance with empty proclamations, it does not advance with slogans on banners and ingenious phrases. It does not advance by magic, a country advances from the reality that surrounds us and how we transform it," said the Catalan president, who trusts "replicate" the independence victory of the Catalan elections of February 14, 2021 in next year's municipal elections.

In this regard, he highlighted that once again Ernest Maragall will be the ERC candidate for Mayor of Barcelona, Ernest Maragall will win the Mayor's Office of the Catalan capital.

In addition, he hopes to get a majority "in favor of civil and political rights, dialogue, negotiation, amnesty and self-determination", the same mantra that he launched his party in the regional elections.

Aragonès advanced his speech to Saturday since on Sunday he will travel to the Conference of Autonomous Presidents on the Canary Island of La Palma.

"ERC has always always always proven to be the most faithful partner to the country. Those of us who are always there, those of us who roll up our sleeves. Those of us who, when necessary, clear the way. We already know that whoever goes first, whoever clears paths, suffers scratches. We are the ones who shout little, but we make things happen," Aragonès said and also urged "summary, cohesion and expanding support from the plurality and diversity" of Catalonia.

In addition, he called for a "feminist" country, because "with patriarchy there is no freedom" and in favor of LGTBIQ+ rights and the environmental, anti-racist and anti-fascist struggle: "I want a country that fights fascism, that stands up to the extreme right and that It will face any government in which the extreme right participates. They will always have us in front of them. They will not pass!"

Roadmap

What is clear is that the 'road map' of the Republicans intends to mark its own profile and distance itself from the rest of the most agitated independence movement.

The paper to be approved at this National Conference will insist on negotiating with the State but will also raise the need to create "spaces of sovereignty" on the sidelines, without forgetting other "alternatives" such as disobedience in the event that the meetings fail.

However, within the ERC there is dissidence and voices against this path of negotiation.

The Col·lectiu Primer d'Octubre sector calls for the unilateral path and implementation of the mandate of the 1-O referendum, although its request will not prosper since the majority of militants are committed to the current strategy of the leadership with dialogue with the State as main road to independence.

Thus, they hope that the progress at the negotiating table between the Government and the Generalitat will allow the independence movement to get out of its current discouragement and once again achieve important social mobilizations.

They will demand amnesty and the right to self-determination and just in case they don't get what they hope for, they bet on having "democratic alternatives", although without specifying beyond actions of political and social disobedience for "democratic overflow".

The same "empty proclamations" that make their partners in the Government ugly.

In addition to the political 'road map', ERC is also committed to other areas such as improving access to housing and employment for young people, environmental improvements, the elimination of schools that segregate by sex;

or make linguistic immersion effective for a normalization of Catalan as a "common language".

Two round tables will be held at this National Conference: one on Saturday, on the resolution of democratic conflicts, with Marta Rovira, Arnaldo Otegi (Bildu) and Declan Kearney, president of Sinn Féin;

and another on Sunday, on republican transformations, with the Minister for Equality, Tània Verge, along with former ministers Chakir el Homrani, Meritxell Serret and Ernest Maragall, among others.
