A policeman was injured in a knife attack in France, and the assailant was killed

A policeman was injured in Marseille, in southern France, on Saturday, by a knife-wielding man who was neutralized by police bullets, and died of his wounds, municipal sources said.

The attack happened in the morning, when the man attacked three municipal policemen, Yannick Ohanesian, assistant security and municipal police in Marseille, told AFP.

He added that the colleagues of the targeted policeman "first responded with their non-lethal weapons, then one of the policemen responded with his lethal weapon", fatally wounding the assailant.

The Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, who is in Marseille, on Saturday morning, to inaugurate a new police station, said that the "aggressor is French".

"At the moment, as far as I know, the police do not know him and he has not had a criminal record," he said.
