The answer below:

news of the day

While Russian tanks were only ten kilometers from Kiev this Friday and Moscow continued to shell Kharkiv or Mariupol, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky felt that the European Union should "do more" for Ukraine, after the leaders of the 27 had ruled out any rapid accession of Ukraine to the EU the day before.

“We have to go harder.

This is not what we expect, Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video on Telegram.

The decisions of politicians must coincide with the mood of their peoples, the European peoples (…) The European Union must do more for us, for Ukraine.

sentence of the day

We have no news of about twenty Ukrainian legionnaires out of the approximately 700 that we have in our ranks.

These are the words of Colonel Antoine Fleuret, Chief of Staff of the Foreign Legion Command, interviewed by Caroline Politi, for

20 Minutes

.

The colonel explains that as soon as they enlist, the legionnaires no longer have the right to fight for a country other than France, including their homeland.

However, exceptional leave has been put in place to allow Ukrainian soldiers to go to the safety of their loved ones.

The number of the day

500.

These are the additional millions of euros proposed by the European Union this Friday to finance weapons for Ukraine.

This proposal made in Versailles, where the heads of state and government of the EU are meeting at the summit, would bring this sum to 1 billion euros.

For its part, the American Congress adopted a new federal budget which includes a staggering envelope of nearly 14 billion dollars.

The voted text includes an economic and humanitarian component, but also arms and ammunition for Kiev.

The trend of the day

Poutine is skating, as

Liberation

headlined on Thursday, but Poutine is not giving up.

Isolated, weakened, the Russian president nevertheless assured to see "positive progress" in the talks with Ukraine, during a meeting with his (virtually alone) Belarusian ally Alexander Lukashenko.

And this, while the EU has decided to strengthen its military aid to Ukraine, despite warnings from Moscow.

For its part, slowed down by its many flaws (desertions, logistical problems, morale of the troops at half mast, etc.), the Russian army nevertheless continued its offensive, reaching the suburbs of Kiev.

Aware of its weaknesses, Moscow announced that Syrian nationals could volunteer to go and fight the Ukrainian forces.

The sending of Syrians was proposed by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to Vladimir Putin, who hastened to approve: "If you see that people want to go there voluntarily (…) and help those who live in the Donbass, so you have to meet them and help them reach the combat zone.

The nationality of these warriors presented as volunteers owes nothing to chance.

Russia has provided considerable military support to the Syrian regime since the fall of 2015, supporting its forces against those of the opposition and those of the jihadists, de facto saving the power of Bashar al-Assad who now controls most of Syria. .
