All children of school age who receive a residence permit according to the Mass Refugee Directive have the right to get a place in a Swedish school class within two months.

A time frame that can be difficult to keep if many people come at the same time, according to Åza Jarlsdotter.

- Then you will see if it is possible to arrange temporary solutions.

Right now we are looking for another room and also have job advertisements out there where we are looking for staff who speak Ukrainian.

We also have the opportunity to redistribute staff from other operations.

84 unaccompanied minors

Before the children are placed in a class, they come to the municipality's reception unit where they will receive an introduction and where their prior knowledge will be mapped.

How many will come to Sweden is impossible to say.

To date, a little more than 2,000 children and young people have come from Ukraine since the outbreak of the war, 84 of them unaccompanied.

In Norrköping, the first families have registered with the education administration, but Åza Jarlsdotter expects this to be just the beginning.

- Today we receive a maximum of 30 new arrivals at a time, but if you look back to 2015, we received up to 130 students.

We can scale up to those levels if needed.

Twice as many

Other municipalities have also begun to map the capacity out in the schools to receive newly arrived children and young people from Ukraine.

And it looks different in the country.

Uppsala municipality has taken an inventory of their educational places and with current resources, they estimate that they can accommodate a total of 300 students.

But Stockholm is currently preparing for the fact that there may be more than 3,000 new students who will have a place in the school - twice as many as in a normal year.

- We have a solid organization around the reception of newly arrived students and are now preparing to expand the resources further.

So I am confident that we will be able to handle it, says Lee Orberson, elementary school director in the city of Stockholm.
