Macron warns of new harsh sanctions against Russia if the Ukraine war continues

French President Emmanuel Macron warned Friday after an EU summit in Versailles that the Europeans were ready to impose new "harsh sanctions" on Russia if the war in Ukraine continued.

"If things continue at the military level ... we will impose new sanctions, including severe ones," the French president told reporters, stressing that the European Union supports Ukraine "until the end."

"We are ready to impose sanctions beyond those that were adopted. I deliberately maintain strategic ambiguity. Additional decisions will be taken after the G7 meeting, and they will be limited," he added.

"Nothing is forbidden, nothing is prohibited. We are ready to impose tougher sanctions," he added.

The French president said he would speak "in the coming hours with Russian President Vladimir Putin" to try to reach a ceasefire and demand the withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine.

In turn, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed that "a fourth package of sanctions will be imposed. As President Macron said, we are determined to respond appropriately to the brutal aggression carried out by Vladimir Putin and our response will be strong."
