The European Commission, together with the G7 countries, has proposed a fourth sanctions package against Russia.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Friday night that Russia will be deprived of its status as "most favored nation".

This means that EU member states can increase customs duties on Russian goods.

The EU and G7 countries also want to ban investment in the Russian energy sector, stop the import of goods linked to the Russian iron and steel industry and stop the export of European luxury products to Russia.

According to SVT's European correspondent David Boati, it is likely that the sanctions will become a reality.

- The entire EU apparatus has been energized by this war - I believe that the desire to continue to mark quickly, strongly and unitedly means that most and perhaps all of this goes through.

Russian energy hot question

According to David Boati, it is clear that Europe's countries are prepared to make sacrifices; Russia, for example, is a large market for European luxury products.

But there are possible sanctions that the EU has not yet been interested in taking.

- The biggest sacrifice, a import ban on Russian energy - which would cause chaos and significantly higher prices - so far the EU countries are not willing to go, says David Boati.

The issue of a halt to imports of Russian energy was discussed so recently at the recently concluded EU summit in Versailles.

- The leaders agreed to eventually stop buying Russian coal, oil and gas altogether.

But Europe is not ready to impose an immediate import ban imposed by the United States.

The United States bans vodka imports

The United States has already decided on new measures.

In a speech on Friday, US President Joe Biden announced a US import ban on alcohol, diamonds and fishery products.

According to TT, the United States imports Russian alcohol for over $ 24 million annually, and according to CNN, Russian fishery products (mainly crab) for about $ 1.2 billion.
