The number of war refugees from the Ukraine who have arrived in Germany has passed the 100,000 mark.

A spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced that 109,183 refugees had been registered by Friday morning.

This is 13,270 more than on Thursday.

The actual number could be "already much higher", explained the spokesman.

There are increased controls by the federal police, but no fixed border controls.

Overall, only a relatively small proportion of people come to Germany.

According to the UN, more than 2.3 million people have fled Ukraine since the start of the Russian offensive on February 24.

The largest part is therefore in the Ukraine neighboring country Poland.

It is unclear how many of them will travel to Germany and other EU countries.

"The task could be bigger than in 2015"

The German Association of Cities has called for specific federal and state regulations to ensure a fair distribution of refugees from Ukraine.

"The main challenge remains fair distribution," said the chief executive of the city council, Helmut Dedy, of the "Passauer Neue Presse" on Friday.

"The task for our country could be bigger than in 2015," he added. At the same time, Dedy emphasized: "We'll manage it somehow."

In the course of the refugee crisis in 2015, more than a million people came to Germany from Syria, among other places.

Dedy warned against trying to use pictures "like that the boat would be full with us".

Despite the large crowds, he assumes that the cities are able to offer housing and help to all people who want it.

"We want to do everything we can to make it happen.

In addition, we have a very great willingness to help the population.”

The refugees should be housed all over the country.

“It takes a solidarity action of all cities and communities.

But that requires the federal and state governments to put certain distribution rules into effect," said Dedy.

That has not yet happened.

The city council representative sees the large number of children and unaccompanied young people as a major challenge: "They all have to come to schools and daycare centers at some point." Above all, the unaccompanied minors, who are currently increasingly entering the country, "need special care".

Dedy reiterated the City Day's call for a speedy refugee summit.

Even before that, however, he expects "an agreement on what we want to keep in terms of accommodation capacities in view of the uncertain duration of the war".

The cities and municipalities should not be left to bear the costs.

CDU leader Friedrich Merz demanded on Thursday evening that refugees from Ukraine be registered in Germany.

Germany has experiences from 2015/16, including bad ones, said Merz on the ZDF program "Maybrit Illner".

The refugees who are now arriving would be visa-free and have a right of residence, said Merz, who is also the leader of the parliamentary group in the Bundestag.

"But I think we still need to know who's coming."

There is "a reasonable assumption" that not only people come from Ukraine.

Therefore, the federal government should ensure that registration takes place.
