In order to improve the situation for pedestrians and cyclists in Frankfurt city centre, one of the three lanes at the Senckenberg facility in the direction of the trade fair will be converted into a cycle lane.

As reported by the traffic department, the new marking is to be applied from March 11th.

The previous one has already been removed.

First of all, the new bike lane will be laid out over a length of 400 meters between the Bockenheimer Landstraße and the new "One Forty West" high-rise building.

Later it is to be extended almost to the Ludwig-Erhard-Anlage.

The fact that the work was not completed in one go has to do with the construction of the Jewish Academy on the corner of Senckenberganlage and Georg-Voigt-Straße.

As soon as the work there is completed, the cycle path will be extended to Georg-Voigt-Straße.

So far, the cycle path has run at the level of the sidewalk and, according to experts, is far too narrow.

The new bike lane will run parallel to car traffic and be at least 2.30 meters wide.

According to the department, it should possibly also be separated from the car lanes by separating elements,

to make cycling safer on this busy road.

Where this is not possible, the bike lanes are colored red so that everyone can clearly see who has the right of way.

At the same time, pedestrians will in future be able to claim the entire width of the sidewalk for themselves.

With the new cycle lane, typical conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians would be avoided in the future, said Mobility Director Stefan Majer (Die Grünen).

This affects, for example, pedestrians crossing at the traffic lights, but also at the subway exit at the Bockenheimer Warte and at the Senckenbergmuseum bus stop.

There were often tricky situations there, also because it was unclear who should be where.

The planning for the new bike lane is being worked out by the cycling office of the road traffic office.

The costs amount to around 65,000 euros.

The traffic department assumes that the new bike lane can be released at the end of March.
