Its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site last July should further enhance its attractiveness.

The Cordouan lighthouse, built more than four centuries ago at the entrance to the Gironde estuary, welcomes between 20,000 to 25,000 visitors each year, from April to September, with a peak in attendance between June and August.

It opens its doors to visitors this Saturday, April 2, after its traditional winter closure, which was the occasion for embellishment work.

Since January 1, 2010, the State has entrusted the management and operation of the Cordouan lighthouse to Smiddest (the joint syndicate which manages the development of the estuary) but it is private maritime transport companies which provide the journeys for get to the site.

The constraints specific to its access will not allow an "explosion" of visits, but the "Versailles of the sea" should experience a busy season.
