The 2x1 is booming in teaching.

Year after year, driven by a global world that demands more and better training, the number of schools that offer one of the courses that most internationalizes a student's profile grows: the American Dual Baccalaureate.

Its main advantage is obvious: at the same time that the Spanish Baccalaureate is taken, the American High School Diploma can be obtained, due to the

automatic validation of 75% of the credits

.

In itself, this is more than enough reason to justify the increase in demand since the program was launched in 2010. "It has grown at a rate of 30% since we implemented it in 2016," agree the director of the Cadiz Grazalema-Guadalete school, Mónica Arias, and the person in charge of the American Dual Baccalaureate project at the Joyfe school in Madrid, Manuel Moreno.

But obtaining two titles is not the only motivation.

Mastery of English and the possibility of pursuing a career in the United States are behind the

growing interest of adolescents in this program

created and developed by Academica Corporation worldwide.

"This year alone, there are almost 20,000 Spanish students in the more than 1,000 schools that have adhered to the American Dual Baccalaureate throughout Spain," specifies José Luis Martínez, director of international developments at Academica Corp. And "every year in Spain we authorize the adherence of 100 new schools”, he adds.

Of course, the double degree does not come for free.

From the outset, only those who pass a selection test at

the center where they study can take this option

, which includes passing 100% of all the courses and subjects of Spanish studies and already having a high level of English.

To this will be added a redouble of effort and

about six more subjects

, among which are English, American History, United States Government and Economics, tools for managing life, and electives to choose from.

In total, between three and five more teaching hours per week;

yes,

online

and personalized with a tutor per student.

For years, student stays abroad have been one of the options chosen by those seeking linguistic and cultural immersion.

But, unless there is a scholarship, it is an expensive option for many pockets and that sometimes means leaving home early.

The American Dual Baccalaureate "provides the experience of studying in an American atmosphere, with cultural immersion and direct contact with American teachers," says Paula Martín, tutor of the program at Grazalema-Guadalete.

Nor does it detract from what would be learned

on the spot

.

"What the curriculum offered in Spain is in

line with what the student would do if they were in person at a High School in the US

," notes Oriol Clemente, director of the dual program at the Sant Miquel school in Barcelona, and with experience teacher in that country.

Teenagers' stays abroad, although enriching, often last no more than a year, which is why they also do not lead to a High School Diploma.

But leaving aside the "

titulitis

, so implemented in our country, which is not positive in the education of our children", the director of developments at Academica highlights that the dual program allows students to advance according to their abilities.

"You just have to put aside some downtime," acknowledges a student from the Andel school in Madrid.

The American Dual Baccalaureate, as stated by those responsible for several schools where it is taught, is not limited to theoretical knowledge.

It enables a

triple immersion: linguistic, technological and personal

.

The program serves advanced bilingualism on a platter, which is so demanded by the labor market and which can open so many doors for them in the future.

But it does it in a very practical way.

"The English they learn is contextualized, with specific vocabulary for each subject," explains the Sant Miquel school teacher.

Even without anticipating the pretensions that may be had at the work level, the High School diploma already has its advantages in the pre-university stage.

One of them is that the command of the language that is achieved

exempts one from taking the Toefl exam when studying a university degree in the US

.

In addition, American universities work with a merit system and foreigners with double degrees receive extra points.

more skills

However, "we are not only learning English," recalls one of the students who is studying the American Dual Baccalaureate at Santa Joaquina de Vedruna in Cartagena.

"We also acquired problem-solving and technology skills," she says.

Technological immersion is actually inevitable.

Students must connect to receive classes, present their homework and take exams, either through the computers provided for them in special classrooms at schools, or at home.

Elisa Albons, director of the Dual Diploma program at the Sant Josep Obrer school in Palma de Mallorca, considers that this way of teaching it «

improves the ability to work

online

autonomously

.

And what better than this with the teleworking situation »unleashed by the pandemic.

Autonomy and freedom to organize are two of the characteristics highlighted by another of the students from Santa Joaquina de Vedruna.

“Individuality is encouraged when acquiring the skills, as well as the independence of the student to organize the use of their time”, highlights the person in charge of Joyfe, as personal development advantages.

In reality, the program pushes its students to an

unusual, or at least unusual,

capacity for self-management at ages around 12.

And it is that, although it is commonly known as a baccalaureate, the truth is that the American dual program can be studied from the second year of ESO, and last from two to four years, depending on the student decides to distribute the subjects.

On a personal level, and without them even noticing it, their tutors point out that students in this type of high school

learn time management and gain the ability to adapt and flexibility

to work in different and multicultural environments.

Constancy, effort or overcoming become values that come to them for free with this double training.

Without forgetting virtues that emanate from the

fortnightly videoconferences between students

that the program includes, such as the loss of fear of speaking in public, which many students highlight.

In short, according to the head of Academica, "the aspects that influence their maturity and growth are reinforced to develop their skills, abilities and skills."
