Two hundred and fifty Ukrainian soldiers are currently based in Goma and engaged in the UN force.

Because of the war in their country, Kiev decided to bring them back.

The UN is trying to find solutions to replace this force which provided valuable logistical assistance.

With 250 troops out of a force of 14,000, Ukraine is far from the top ten troop-contributing countries.

Nevertheless, this contingent constitutes a crucial component of the mission, because Kiev provides eight helicopters out of 14. “

It is essential in particular for logistical transport, in an area where the infrastructures are very weak

 ”, indicates a good source.

The Ukrainians are particularly useful for medical evacuations or for the deployment of Congolese soldiers and police.

They also play an important role in setting up the SDCs, small bases set up in the field for several weeks when violence breaks out.

“

For that, you need equipment that follows, rapid deployment.

The Ukrainians bring a real capacity for mobility

”, explains an observer.

However, the withdrawal implies the departure of soldiers from Kiev, but also of their helicopters, their equipment and their personnel responsible for maintenance.

It's not a surprise and it's their right to leave, even if it doesn't make the task any easier

,” says a member of MONUSCO.

The subject is currently being discussed at UN headquarters in New York with the Ukrainian representation.

The goal is to define a departure schedule, settle legal issues and reduce the impact on the mission.

Other Member States will in any case be contacted to replace the Ukrainians and avoid a problematic void for the blue helmets.
